True help is not to merely feed the hungry and clothe the undressed; it is to change a person’s heart, to help him/her transition from hatred and animosity to love and respect. That is the purpose of setting up prayer tents across the cities in Eastern Ukraine, helping people overcome emotional post-war distress.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).
The prayer tents have become a place where people come with concerns and troubles to pray for comfort and speak up about their pain and needs. Every person who visits the tent receives a prayer book, a gospel, and a special pamphlet “How to resume living” designed to give hope to people in despair. Children receive kid’s literature. All the literature is in great demand, with many people asking for more for themselves or their families, friends, and neighbors. One of the women told her story: when the city of Slavyansk was seized, she continued working at the market selling sunflower seeds. Someone has given her a prayer book and said “pray as written in there.” So she prayed. Not long after that, the market was shelled, and one of the shells hit the car near her. During the entire shelling, she stood still and held closely the prayer book, not being able to recall a prayer but believing that it will help her. The car near her exploded, and “a glass with sunflower seeds did not even overturn,” she recalls with tears in her eyes.
In these sorrow times, it is important to not only help rebuild and restore people’s homes, but also restore their souls. We understand that destroyed houses and streets are a small fraction of the destruction brought into people’s lives by the war. Hands are needed to restore cities, and God’s miracle – to restore individual’s soul, fulfilling it with forgiveness, hope, and love for each other.
